Selecting the best oscar fish food can be a little overwhelming at first because there are so many choices. I would like to discuss and suggest some of the best options you have to in feeding oscars.

Before we look at the different options, I would like to make one point first. Please mix up your Oscar's diet often. Switching up and rotating what oscars eat will help ensure a healthy, well balanced diet.

How much and how often?

Oscar fish are known as "water-pigs" for a reason. They love to eat. When oscars are young, you should feed them 2-3 times per day. As they get older you can start cutting it back to 1-2 times per day. Monitor and keep a mental record to how much food gets wasted. Only feed what the oscar can eat in a few minutes. Anything more that is wasted will pollute your water and cause major problems down the road. As your oscar grows, his appetite will also.

Oscar Pellets

I highly suggest that you choose a high quality pellet fish food as the Oscar's staple diet. This pellet should be fed as their main food 3-4 days per week. You may then supplement with other forms of food for the rest of the week.

The reason I suggest high quality pellets is because they are not as messy as flakes, more gets eaten, less waste, and just easier to handle.

Freeze Dried Fish Foods

Freeze-dried fish foods offer a great source of nutrition that you can supplement in with their staple diet several times a week. Many people use freeze dried foods as treats for their Oscar fish. Freeze dried fish foods offer another great benefit.

If you ever need to dose vitamins or medication to your Oscar fish, you can do so easily by using freeze dried foods. All you have to do is put your freeze dried food in a cup or bowl and then dose your vitamins or medication. Let it soak for 15 minutes then feed to your Oscar.

You can even train your Oscar to eat freeze dried krill out of your hand.

There are several very popular freeze-dried fish foods that are often fed to oscars and these include brine shrimp, krill, plankton, bloodworms, and even crickets. As your Oscar grows, you will probably not use the brine shrimp or bloodworms as often due to their small size.

Frozen Fish Foods

Frozen fish food offers one of the best sources of nutrition for your Oscar. Frozen fish food must be kept in the freezer, but your Oscar will go crazy for this type of food.

Live Food

Many Oscar keepers make the mistake of offering feeder fish to their Oscar. Please do no do this. Feeder fish especially goldfish carry numerous diseases that your Oscar can catch. You are far better off feeding high quality pellets like those above than feeder fish.

The key to a healthy Oscar is keeping it's tank clean and providing a highly nutritious diet. Mix things up from time-to-time and be sure not to overfeed, and do not feed cheap Oscar Fish Food.
